Removable Bands: For Active, Working & Show Horses
For active, working and show horses, a removable band is often recommended. This type of band offers several benefits, including:
Flexibility: Removable bands can be easily taken off and put back on as needed, making them convenient for horses that participate in different activities.
Comfort: These bands can be adjusted to ensure a proper fit, reducing the risk of discomfort or injury.
Versatility: Removable bands can be used in various situations, such as during training or when the horse is resting.
Removable bands provide a practical solution for managing active, working and show horses, ensuring their well-being and performance.
Permanent Band: For Wintered Horses, Broodmares, or Horses Not Mounted for Extended Periods
For horses that are wintered, broodmares, or those not mounted for extended periods, a permanent band is recommended.
Reduced risk of loss: once closed, permanent bands cannot be opened until removed by cutting the band.
Consistency: Permanent bands provide continuous protection and support, which benefits horses at higher risk of infections.
Convenience: Since these horses are not actively working or competing, the need for flexibility is reduced, making permanent bands a suitable option.
Permanent bands ensure that horses with less frequent handling remain protected, especially in conditions where infections are more likely to occur.

Effective - 24/7 Action
Dermashield® uses state-of-the-art copper ion slow-release technology. This provides a targeted action to the needed area via a downward flow of copper ions, carried by moisture, from the band to the hoof.
The flow of copper ions creates a zone around the horse’s hoof 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Economical & Simple to Use
Dermashield® if worn full time has a useable life of approximately 1 year. Moisture from incidental contact will activate Dermashield®, releasing ions for up to 12 months.
Simply apply above the hoof on the pastern.

Safe & Responsible
Dermashield® is a solid copper insert inside a polypropylene strap. It is made of the highest purity copper. (US C110000 Copper alloy, 99.9% Copper) Dermashield® should be stored in a clean, dry place.
Chemical Free - Safe to handle for you and your staff.
Antimicrobial Stewardship -Dermashield® contains no antibiotic.
Environmentally Friendly - The amount of copper used per band is approximately a tiny 17mg per day

Easy to Recycle
After it is used, Dermashield® can be disposed of where recycling is available for polypropylene, the most recyclable of all plastics, (Recycling number 5) according to your local authorities.
Dermashield® Can Be Deployed In 3 Ways
MONEY SAVER | MORE EFFECTIVE | ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP
1. To Provide a Barrier
Horses always benefit from continuous copper ion flow when incidental moisture is available.
2. To Provide Copper Ions When Risk of Problems is Increased
This would include after an intervention such as farrier work, or where an issue is noted.
3. In Conjunction with Therapy
Dermashield® can assist in conjunction with therapy on active lesions or wounds, by providing a flow of copper ions.

Installation
Follow these steps for the best results
NOTE: When using Dermashield® Permanent Bands be aware that they are not removable!
▫️ Please take care of the bands do not lock to each other or fabrics - once located they cannot be removed other than cutting with scissors.
▫️ Please choose Removable Bands if intermittent removal is required.
▫️ To facilitate correct installation and to ensure safety of both the animal and the person installing the Dermashield® band, use safe hoof care practices. During farrier work is an ideal time to install Dermashield® leg bands.
1. Dermashield® is installed on the pastern below the fetlock.
2. Note the date of installation for records
3. Before installation, line the band up on the horse pastern, ensure the band overlaps on itself (The male velcro end of the band should not hold the band together. If so, the band is too small for the horse and should not be used.)
4. NOTE: The band must not be firm or tight, to allow for lunging flex and to prevent loss. Two fingers side-by-side under the strap for spacing is adequate in most cases.
5. Install Dermashield® by fixing the band to the leg on the pastern near the hoof with the velcro fastening to the front side. As in point 3. above, the strap must have some overlap of the active material.
6. Using both thumbs, slide them along the strap length pressing firmly to interlock the velcro hooks.
7. The Dermashield® leg band should be inspected at regular intervals to make sure the copper insert not exhausted (either with test strips or by feel.) Leg bands have an active strip that dissolves over time. Do not use past 9-12 months. Please replace at or before 12 months.
NB: Please do not use Dermashield® with copper or formaldehyde foot baths. This may significantly reduce the life of the Dermashield® leg band.

case study
Thrush Control with Dermashield®
Thrilled to share a success story from Canada. Alyssa Blumberg owner of Ashblue Equestrian had two horses, Brooke and Hiji, who used to have chronic thrush issues requiring constant care and 2 treatments per week.
Dermashield® leg bands were installed on both front feet in October 2023. Despite the particularly wet and muddy conditions they faced in winter, their thrush troubles vanished within a week.
No treatments have been need since!

Always on 24/7 Footbath
